Google launches Deep Research Agentic feature

Google has added a new feature to Gemini , called Deep Research, and it's being introduced alongside the new Gemini 2.0 family of AI models, and it can create multi-step research plans, perform web searches, and produce detailed reports on complex topics.

The company says the feature could be useful for researchers and students who have to write research papers, and the new AI feature is available to Gemini Advanced subscribers on the web version of the chatbot

Gemini gets new deep search feature

Advanced thinking has become a topic of interest for AI companies trying to increase the intelligence and processing power of their AI models

While upgrading the analytical power of large language models (LLMs) will require reimagining the network architecture and learning algorithms, researchers have developed some shortcuts to achieve this to some extent

A common approach used by OpenAI ’s O1 models  and the ones recently released by Alibaba is to increase computing time, allowing the AI to spend more time on the same question. This allows the AI to check its answers, consider other alternatives, and ultimately generate more detailed answers. Another way to do this is through AI agents, which is what Google did with its Gemini AI model

Deep Search is essentially an agent-based feature, meaning that once a user enters a query about a complex topic, the AI agent starts creating a multi-step search plan. A typical plan includes steps like breaking the topic down into smaller parts, finding research papers and articles related to the topic, and searching for trends, future impacts, and related fields

Once the search plan is ready, users can intervene and add, remove, or change steps to better target the topic. The AI then starts executing the plan and starts searching for all the information. The feature can also run many new web searches based on what it has learned to understand additional topics

It then analyzes the collected data, creates a detailed report and displays the results to the user. These responses will generally be more in-depth and detailed than a typical Gemini response, and Google says this is ideal for market researchers, academics, research students and even entrepreneurs

Deep Research is currently available in Gemini Advanced on the web version of the chatbot in English, and Google has highlighted that the feature will be available in the mobile app in early 2025. Deep Research can be found in the model selector dropdown and is listed as “Gemini 1.5 Pro with Deep Research.”
