Elon Musk's xAI is planning to launch a standalone ChatGPT-like app next month, a move that could help make up for xAI's delay in joining the AI space and take rapid steps to bridge the gap.
Over the past few months, the AI company has rolled out the ability to call functions within large language models (LLMs), launched an API for developers, and is now testing a free version of its AI model to take on OpenAI with a ChatGPT-like app.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk aims to build Grok AI as a standalone product, citing people familiar with the matter, so he plans to launch a standalone chat app for Grok, similar to ChatGPT.
Musk is looking to create new ways to generate revenue through AI offerings.
It is worth noting that the company announced incentives in the form of free tokens to attract developers, and it seems that the plan is to provide Grok to as many people as possible and provide other programs and applications supported by its capabilities.
The WSJ report also claimed that Musk's ultimate goal is to compete with OpenAI and present its products and services as a viable alternative in every space that ChatGPT occupies.
However, Grok lacks many features like native image generation, audio support, and agent AI capabilities, something that major competitors like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and others already offer.
Accordingly, the rivalry between Musk and OpenAI is not new, and it is worth noting that Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI earlier this year for violating its contract to remain non-profit.
The manufacturer of ChatGPT responded to the allegations, calling them “baseless and exaggerated.”
